Bunut Chicken Porridge of Sukabumi: A Legendary Delight

For the past two years, every time I visit Sukabumi, I always make time to try this culinary delight. As soon as I arrive in the city, I carve out a moment to enjoy chicken porridge. And which chicken porridge, you ask? None other than Bubur Ayam Bunut, located at Jl. Siliwangi No. 93/131, Sukabumi, West Java.

The Journey

This year, we traveled from Bogor to Sukabumi for Eid. Aside from reconnecting with family, we also planned to visit a relative recovering from surgery. We departed around 3:30 AM and arrived in Sukabumi at approximately 6:00 AM. Traveling at this hour is the best way to avoid traffic jams.

By the time we arrived, our stomachs were growling, so we began thinking about finding breakfast. A quick Google Maps check showed that the porridge shop opens at 6:00 AM. Confidently, we headed straight there.

Arriving at Bubur Ayam Bunut Sukabumi

When we got there, the place was still quiet, and we were their first customers—quite amusing! Outside, we were greeted by vendors selling kue ape (a traditional pancake) and shredded beef floss, who regularly set up in front of this porridge restaurant. I asked them if the shop really opened this early, and they confirmed that it did.

Once we placed our orders, other customers began to arrive. By 6:15 AM, the restaurant was already packed—an impressive feat.

The morning atmosphere was serene after a drizzle that had started at dawn. The weather was cool, accompanied by shy rays of sunlight peeking through. The restaurant had a simple setup, offering both table seating and a more traditional lesehan (seating on the floor). At the back, there was a koi pond, and the front was adorned with plants, creating a refreshing and cozy environment.

We were ready to savor this unique experience.

Bunut Chicken Porridge

This chicken porridge likely uses shredded ayam kampung (free-range chicken) because its savory flavor stood out compared to other chicken porridges. The porridge itself was relatively thick, making it quite filling. The seasoning was rich and flavorful, making every spoonful a delight.

For those seeking something extra, there’s a special chicken porridge option, which comes with added pieces of chicken liver and gizzard for a more complete dish.

According to my dad, this chicken porridge has been around since his school days, cementing its legendary status in Sukabumi’s culinary scene. Visitors to this city shouldn’t miss out on trying this iconic dish. Where will our next adventure take us?
